The Contax Netball Club community gathered at The Highway Hotel on Saturday, 30 May, for a memorable evening celebrating the people whose contributions have helped shape the club’s proud history and enduring success.
The Hall of Fame Night brought together players, coaches, officials, volunteers, Life Members, sponsors and supporters from across generations to honour four remarkable individuals whose impact on Contax and the sport of netball has been profound.
The evening celebrated the induction of Pauline Fielden OAM and Sarah Sutter into the Contax Hall of Fame, while Rod Hook and Tania Obst were not only inducted into the Hall of Fame but elevated to the prestigious status of Contax Legend.
Pauline Fielden OAM – The Heart of Contax
The first induction of the evening recognised Pauline Fielden OAM, a woman whose name has become synonymous with Contax Netball Club.
Pauline joined Contax Basketball Club, as it was originally known, in 1960 as an A Grade player. While her playing career concluded in 1965, her commitment to the club was only just beginning.
For the next 65 years, Pauline dedicated herself to every aspect of club life. She coached players from NetSetGo through to A Grade, served on the Management Committee, became Club President on three occasions and played a pivotal role in introducing junior teams to Contax in 1966, helping establish the junior pathway that remains at the heart of the club today.
Awarded Life Membership in 1979, Pauline’s contribution extends far beyond premierships and positions held. Her legacy lives through the generations of players, coaches, volunteers and families she has mentored, encouraged and inspired.
The room reflected on an extraordinary lifetime of service as Pauline was officially welcomed into the Contax Hall of Fame, a fitting recognition for someone who has truly embodied the spirit of the Blues.
Sarah Sutter – A Defensive Great
The second inductee recognised one of the most influential players of Contax’s golden era, Sarah Sutter.
Recruited to Contax as a 15-year-old by legendary coach Marg Angove OAM in 1986, Sarah quickly emerged as one of the state’s most dominant defenders and became a cornerstone of the club’s success throughout the late 1980s and 1990s.
Alongside fellow Contax great Kathryn Harby, Sarah formed one of South Australian netball’s most feared defensive combinations. The legendary “Harby/Sutter” partnership became synonymous with the relentless defensive pressure that helped establish Contax as the benchmark club of the era.
During her State League career, Sarah helped deliver five premierships for the Blues while also achieving success at the highest levels of the game. As Australian Diamond No. 113, she earned 18 Test caps and won gold medals at the 1995 Netball World Cup and the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
Sarah also became an inaugural Adelaide Thunderbird in 1997 and was part of the premiership-winning teams of 1998 and 1999.
Her connection with Contax has remained strong long after her playing days, serving as the club’s Number One Ticket Holder from 2015 to 2024 and continuing to support and mentor emerging defenders within the club’s pathways.
With Marg Angove OAM joining her on stage, Sarah was warmly welcomed into the Contax Hall of Fame.
One of the most significant moments of the evening came with the induction of Rod Hook into the Hall of Fame and his elevation to Contax Legend status.
Rod’s journey with Contax began in 1988 when his daughter Danielle joined the club. What started as a parent volunteering on weekends soon evolved into one of the most influential administrative careers in South Australian netball history.
Joining the Management Committee in 1990, Rod brought a visionary approach that transformed the club’s future. Through innovative sponsorship strategies and strong commercial leadership, he helped establish the foundations of the high-performance environment that continues to exist today.
Among his many achievements was securing the sponsorship partnership with ETSA in 1995, a relationship that continues today through SA Power Networks and remains one of the longest-standing sponsorship partnerships in South Australian sport.
Rod’s influence extended well beyond Contax. Alongside Marg Angove OAM, he played a critical role in establishing the Adelaide Thunderbirds in 1997 and served as inaugural Chair of the Thunderbirds Board during the club’s formative years.
His contribution to netball administration was equally significant, including more than a decade as Chair of the Netball SA State League Management Committee and helping secure funding for the Netball SA Stadium through his advocacy and leadership.
Awarded Contax Life Membership in 2003 and serving as Club Patron since 2020, Rod’s influence continues to shape both Contax and netball across South Australia.
His elevation to Contax Legend recognises a legacy that has fundamentally changed the trajectory of the club and the sport.
The final induction of the evening recognised one of the most accomplished and respected figures in Australian netball, Tania Obst.
Joining Contax in 1988, Tania quickly established herself as one of the premier shooters in South Australian netball and became a key figure in one of the club’s most successful eras.
As a player, she was part of four State League premierships and served as Club Captain during a transformative period in the late 1990s as netball entered the National League era.
Her contribution as a player was exceptional, but it was only the beginning of a remarkable career.
Transitioning into coaching, Tania led Contax to five State League premierships as Head Coach and re-established the Blues as the dominant force in South Australian netball during the early 2000s.
Her success at club level led to appointments with the South Australian Sports Institute, Australian Under 21 programs and England Netball, where she was part of the coaching team that secured a historic Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2018.
In 2019, Tania returned to South Australia to take charge of the Adelaide Thunderbirds and has since overseen one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Australian sport. Under her leadership, the Thunderbirds ended a lengthy premiership drought before claiming back-to-back Suncorp Super Netball titles in 2023 and 2024.
Recognised as the 2024 Suncorp Super Netball Coach of the Year, Tania continues to be regarded as one of the game’s leading coaching minds.
Her induction into the Hall of Fame and elevation to Contax Legend status recognises an extraordinary contribution to Contax, South Australian netball and the international game.
The Hall of Fame Night served as a powerful reminder of the people who have built the culture, success and reputation that define Contax Netball Club today.
From volunteers and administrators to players and coaches, each inductee has left an enduring mark on the club and the broader netball community.
Contax congratulates Pauline Fielden OAM, Sarah Sutter, Rod Hook and Tania Obst on their well-deserved recognition and thanks them for their extraordinary contributions to our club.
Their stories form an important part of the Contax legacy and will continue to inspire future generations of Blues for years to come.
